Funny, I've heard the exact opposite, that they were very good friends at the time, particularly around season 4. I've seen lots of quotes from old interviews done during the show where James is gushing about Sarah and how wonderful she is, and how nice she was to him on set. Sarah was also gushing about James, around season 3 she said she was his biggest fan and that she wanted to get him back to the show. During season 4, she said in an interview that she wanted Spike to be Buffy's new boyfriend and that Joss was like "Another vampire? Uh, no" when she suggested it (he obviously changed his mind during that year!). James tends to talk a bit too much in interviews, and he's said so many different things. He did say she was like a sister to him, but in some other interview when he was asked who was more attractive, Sarah or Alyson, he said Sarah was his type and I've seen other quotes where he was asked something like this, he joked (?) that she had a boyfriend who knows martial arts so he better not talk about that. He also claimed that he wanted Spike to fall for Buffy (though he thought she would never reciprocate) and that he told Joss that he had a crush on Sarah, but supposedly just to put the idea into his head, but that it wasn't true (right, OK) and that Sarah heard about it from Joss and asked him and he just stared at her, because, supposedly, she was really just like a sister to him (hmm).

What we do know is that he accompanied her when she went to see her mom in New York after 9/11, he was at her birthday party, there's a pic of them at some movie premiere, so it seems like they were quite friendly. It seemed like it later deteriorated or soured - I don't know if it was just because they hated the sroryline and the scenes they did in season 6, because there is a rumour that Freddie Prinze Jr. is a very jealous guy and doesn't like Sarah being close with her male co-stars, and that he didn't want to hang out with James at all during season 6, and that they had to sneak out when they wanted to hang out. I don't know if it's true - like I said, a rumour. But there is a quote from an interview with James done around season 5 (when Sarah got engaged to Freddie) where he answers that he wasn't invited to the engagement party, and though he had all her phone numbers, that he hasn't heard from her but she must be very busy.

I don't know what the truth is, though I wouldn't be surprised if the rumour about Freddie is true - male/female friendships sadly often break when one of them finds a boyfriend/girlfriend who's a jealous type, even if there was nothing romantic there to begin with.

I know that both Sarah and James were very negative about Spuffy since season 6, though Sarah hasn't talked about shipping since the show ended, as far as I know. At the Paley fest they seemed friendly. At the panel, she still said she hated season 6 and Buffy acting that way, but she was glad that the Smashed scene won the TV Guide sexiest scene and mentioned it to James, and she was also joking how it was fun playing Buffybot and 'being his slave for a while'. Though James didn't really talk much and didn't seem in such a good mood as Nick, Seth, Sarah and Michelle.
